How to name a Compound: Chemical nomenclature is the term given to classify a compound. Chemists use specific rules to convey different compounds. Formula's and Names of Binary Non metal Compounds Binary compounds are chemical compounds that contains two different elements (ONLY TWO). Ex: Sodium Flouride (NaF) and Magnesium Oxide (MgO).Rules Add -ide to the second element. Use Greek prefixes for # of atoms. (Mono, di, tri, tetra, penta, hexa, hepta, octa, nona, deca) Examples Carbon monoxide (CO) Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Dinitrogen Pentoxide (N2O5) Polyatomic ions are ions/compounds that consits of more than one atom.Examples Ammonium (NH4+) Cyanide (CN-) Hydroxide (OH-) Binary Acids are compunds that hydrogen is combined with a non metallic atom. RuleThe prefixes must have -Hydro and the suffixes mustv have an -ic ending.Examples Hydroflouric acid (HF) Hydrochloride acid (HC) Hydrobromic acid (HBr) Hydroiodic acid (HI) Hydro Sulfic (H2S)
