After the Holocaust, Jews wanted to establish themselves in the land of Israel. However, [blank_start]Palestinians[blank_end] were already living there. To compromise, the United Nations tried to separate the two groups of people between two states. But May of [blank_start]1948[blank_end], Israel declared its independence. This time is known to Palestinians as [blank_start]Il Nekba[blank_end] - the catastrophe. It sparkled the Israeli War of [blank_start]Independence[blank_end]. When this war ended, Israeli forces had control of the majority of Palestine. Many Palestinians fled to neighbouring countries or [blank_start]refugee[blank_end] camps. Tension between Israel and Palestine grew. In [blank_start]1967[blank_end], the [blank_start]Six[blank_end] Day War left Israeli forces in control of the Gaza Strip and the [blank_start]West Bank[blank_end]. They became [blank_start]occupied[blank_end] territories. Palestine was divided between those two areas. Now, Israel is creating illegal [blank_start]settlements[blank_end] on these occupied territories with hopes of becoming the larger population. Israeli forces have also established [blank_start]security[blank_end] checkpoints and barriers. These barriers restrict the movement of the Palestinian people, yet allow Israeli citizens to move freely throughout the country.
