The war of resistance against Japan | Also known as WWII to the western world. China was not really part of the united fronts but did have a common enemy against the Japanese. This war to the Chinese was more of a defense against Japanese militant advancement to conquer China. During this time, the Chinese had a lot of contact with the western world and a lot of western ideas began to influence the Chinese culture, including theatre. There was an influx of western theatre being done during the time. |
All China Literary Association to Resist the Enemy. | During WWII when Japanese soldiers began occupying Chinese cities, The ACLARE was made to promote anti Japanese cultural activities. It talked about moving to the country side and joining the rebellion against Japanese forces. They branched into major Chinese cities to produce theatre troupes to perform propaganda plays to promote resisting the enemy. |
The United Front | This was the unification of the communist and nationalist party to help reclaim their homeland against the Japanese invasion. |
The Yan'an Period | The Yan'an Period began when Mao marched troupes from the Jianxi province to Yan'an with hopes to create a united front against Japan. |

Liberation (1949) | When xiqu was used to reform politics and culture. It was a time of struggle between the leftist (L) and the rightist (R) for power. A lot of western theatre began to prosper. Was a time of reform. R and L wanted control to see what this new china would be like. Some wanted more globalization while others wanted to be self sufficient as a country. |
Cultural Revolution | when leftists took control. plays like Shajiabang were produced to promote communist thinking and ideas. The plays did not have any middle ground characters, they were either always purely good or bad. |

Red & Black | intellectual youth educated by working as farmers on the country side. Anyone who had contact with other countries were spies. |
