Why are antibiotics, like penicillins, and cephalosporins, not effective against fungi? Penicillins, and cephalosporins act on the synthesis of peptidoglycan in the bacterial cell wall, and not chitin in the fungal cell wall.
Name the polysaccharides of fungal cell wall. Chitin (made up of N-acetylglucosamine) & β- glycan (of D-glucose)
What is the mechanism of action of antifungal caspofungin? It acts on the β-glycan polysaccharide in the fungal cell wall.
