PRACTICAL IMPLICATION ON STEREOTYPING, PREJUDICE AND DISCRIMINATION. (4 MARKS) 1. Research shows that if we experience the effects of prejudice and discrimination, we might try to change our attitudes towards others. (Prejudice and Discrimination) 2. Research shows that most stereotypes promote harmful beliefs, therefore we can make mistakes about people when we meet them for the first time. Stereotypes can stop us from seeing someone for who they truly are.
Aronson's Aim? To eliminate prejudice between black and white students in a school in Texas, USA.
Aronsons Method? He created a technique called the *Jigsaw Method* which menat students were put into mixed-race groups. Each individual had to take responsibilty for a part of the lesson meaning they had to become experts on their part and then pass on the knowledge to another group of students within the class.
Aronson's Results? The technique was proving successful due to each student being resposible for their own learning as well as the learning for others.
Aronson's Conclusion? Aronson interviewed the students afterwards and found that the method had: Enhanced their self-esteem; Increased their liking of their classmates; improved their perceptions of the other racial group within the class
Aronson's Evaluation of the Study? The study took place in only Texas, USA, which meant that the results cannot be generalised cross-culturally. The students were decieved however the benefit of reducing prejudice and discrimination outweighs the cost of deception, however if participants didn't co-opperate the study would increase prejudice. The prejudice may have decreased in the school however the views may noy be generalisable outside the settings and to others.
Aronson's Evaluation of the Theory? The *Jigsaw method*, if one or more people refuse to co-opperate, the task would be incomplete, this could increase prejudice towards those who did not co-opperate. Although the *Jigsaw method* has been proven to work in reducing prejudice, it may not be generalisable to other racial groups for example, the people that took part may be considered as an exception.
