  1. MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES
    1. produced from a single clone of cells
      1. all cells have markers (antigen), microbial antigens seen as 'foreign'
        1. able to target specific cells
        2. inject antigen into mouse
          1. collect spleen cells (where antibody)
            1. fuse spleen cells w/ myeloma cells (cancerous cells)
              1. culture (produce large amounts)
                1. isolate them (chromatography, filtration)
          2. pregnancy tests, produce HCG bind to m. antibodies
            1. anticancer drug to m. antibody for cancer cell antigen
              1. drug only affect cancerous cells no damage to rest of body
                1. too many side effects
              2. diagnosis HIV, herpes, blood hormone levels
              3. HUMAN BODY DEFENCE
                1. 1st line of defence: physical + chemical barriers (skin, eyes: antiseptic liquid)
                  1. 2nd line of defence: phagocytes, engulf pathogens, break down w/ enzymes
                    1. 3rd line of defence: lymphocytes produce antibodies+ antitoxins
                      1. memory lymphocytes: remember anitbody produced, very quickly
                        1. 1st response, takes long time to produce antibodies for infection,
                          1. 2nd response more antibodies produce over short period of time
                            1. (after reinforcement of booster)
                  2. herd immunity
                    1. vaccinate 80& of population, less chance coming in contact w/ disease
