Resumen del Recurso
PostMortem Changes
Blood and Congestion
Clotting
Be aware of postmortem clots; Can mistake for Thrombosis
Genuine Thrombus will be difficult to dislodge, and should have an obvious attachment to the vessel wall
Hypostatic Congestion
If an animal has been lying on one side after death, asymmetric congestion will result
Kidneys & Lungs
Pseudomelanosis
Biliary Imbibition
Autolysis
Tissue self-digestion due to release of intracellular lytic enzymes
Can resemble Necrosis
Tissues undergo autolysis at different rates
Rapid
Stomach, Intestines, Pancreas
Medium
Kidney
Slowly
Muscle, Skin
Putrefaction
Invasion of dead tissue by anaerobes ( Ex. Clostridia)
Tissue turns green/brown
Haemoglobin breakdown
Formation of Hydrogen Sulphide
Pseudomelanosis
Emphysema can occur in putrefied tissue if the organisms liberate gas
Agonal Changes
Occur around time of death (Irreversible circulatory failure)
Vascular congestion (Especially spleen)
Ex. Euthanasia w/ barbituates
Agonal regurgitation of GI contents
Lack of associated inflammation
Barbiturate crystal deposition in Endocardium
GIT Intussusception
1 piece of bowel telescopes inside another
Incidental Findings
Postmortem -> Surgical Biopsy
"Lesions" @ PME or Exploratory surgery
Mistakenly biopsied
Inappropriately assigned as significant
Inappropriately assigned as cause of death
Aging changes
Rigidity of bones, joints and connective tissue
"Wear & tear" to joints
Accumulation of metabolic products in cells
Splenic siderofibrosis
Lungs
Mineralization
Osseous metaplasia
gritty, hard bits
Anthracosis
Lungs contain fine 1 -2mm black foci in subpleural region
Where anthracotic pigment present
Medulla of regional lymph nodes may also be black
Pigmented bronchial lymph nodes
Vasculature
Arteriosclerosis
Atherosclerosis
Fatty plaques building up
Usually underlying metabolic disease
Vessel mineralization
Endocardial mineralization
Drug Associated Changes
Barbituates
Local Rxn
Barbituate crystals
Splenomegaly
Steroids
Vacuolar hepatopathy
Glycogen builds up in cells (Liver)
