    1. Often exist as inactive monomers
      1. Ligand binding induces activation by di/trimerisation
        1. the monomers transphosphorylate each other
          1. adaptor proteins recognise change in structure
          2. Transforming Growth Factor Beta (A Ligand)
            1. brings the monomers together (that exist seperatly)
              1. Heterodimerisation occurs (the monomers are not idetical)
                1. Phosphorylation occurs on the serine-threonine residues
                  1. This ultimately activates the TGF receptor
            2. Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) (A Ligand)
              1. NGF presence causes homodimerisation of receptors with intrinsic cytosolic tyrosine kinase activity
                1. Phosphorylation occurs on the tyrosine residues
                  1. note here, that the monomers are identical
