originally called demetia praecox (premature mental deterioration)
not related to dissociative identity disorder (multiple personality disorder)
schizo is split between emotional and intellectual aspects of experience
diagnosing is difficult no lab tests - based on behavioural observation
DSM-IV to be diagnosed - deterioration least 6 months and 2 of:
delusions
unjustifiable beliefs
positive
hallucinations
false sensory experiences like hearing voices
positive
disorganised speech
positive
behaviours are present that should be absent
grossly disorganised behaviour
positive
weak or absent signs of emotion, speech and socialisation
negative
behaviours are absent that should be present
all judgement calls
cognitive symptoms
limitations of thought and reasoning
difficulty understanding and using abstract concepts related to attention and working memory
