LONG TERM EFFECTS OF EXERCISE
1. Increased efficiency of lungs and lung capacity
2. Increased tidal volume

3. Increased vital capacity
  1. the largest amount of air that can be breathed in and out in one breath
4. Increased number of alveoli available for gaseous exchange
GASEOUS EXCHANGE
1. Fitter people will cope better with gaseous exchange
  1. Getting more oxygen in and carbon dioxide out
    1. It happens when oxygen and carbon dioxide are passed between the capileries on the alveoli and the blood
  2. People who smoke are less efficient with gaseous exchange
OXYGEN DEBT
1. The amount of oxygen consumed during recovery above that which would have ordinarily been consumed in the same time at rest
  1. lactic acid builds up - muscles begin to ache - oxygen debt occurs - leading to cramp
