Campylobacter enterocolitis Organism Mode of transmission Seasonality Incidence- cases in previous 12 months Incidence- five year trend Diarrhoea duration Diarrhoea symptoms Incubation period, average (range) Nausea and vomiting Fever Period of infectivity to others Rx indications Rx Campylobacter enterocolitis Bacteria Water, animals, food, P2P Spring and summer V.common Decreasing Duration: <14 days Symptoms: Variable severity, watery and often bloody Incubation: 2-5 days N & V Fever: Common Period of infectivity: Several weeks after onset of symptoms Rx indications: If severe, symptoms >1 week, pregnant near term, immunocompromised. Food handlers, child care, elderly care. Rx: Erythromycin Ciprofloxacin Has limited effect on symptoms but may reduce stool carriage
Cryptosporidiosis Organism Mode of transmission Seasonality Incidence- cases in previous 12 months Incidence- five year trend Diarrhoea duration Diarrhoea symptoms Incubation period, average (range) Nausea and vomiting Fever Period of infectivity to others Rx indications Rx Cryptosporidiosis Parasite Animals (lambs/calves), water, food and P2P Spring Increasing Duration: <14 days though can persist Profuse and watery Incubation: 7 days N & V Fever: Common Period of infectivity: Several weeks after symptoms resolve Antibiotics not effective Rx: If immunocompromised or have comorbidities discuss with infectious diseases specialist
Giardiasis Organism Mode of transmission Seasonality Incidence- cases in previous 12 months Incidence- five year trend Diarrhoea duration Diarrhoea symptoms Incubation period, average (range) Nausea and vomiting Fever Period of infectivity to others Rx indications Rx Giardiasis Parasite Water, animals, P2P Yearly Decreasing <14->30 Symptoms: Greasy, malodorous, floating stool i.e symptom of malabsorption 7-10 days N, rarely vomiting Fever: Less common Period of infectivity: Up to several months after onset of symptoms Rx indications: If lab tests show infection is present Rx: Ornidazole (tablet only) or metronidazole If ineffective, exclude reinfection from asymptomatic contacts. Interval of 2-3 days between Rx recommended
