CPU | The Central Processing Unit. It is the bulk of all computations in a computer. |
GPU | Graphics Processing Unit. |
Motherboard | The main circuit board of a microcomputer. The motherboard contains slots for additional circuit boards to be added. |
RAM | Random Access Memory. Low latency, high bandwidth, volatile, rewritable memory that serves as a computer's short term processing memory. |
NIC | Network Interface Card. Device used to allow network communications to and from the computer. |
Router | A device that connects two networks together by forwarding (and translating) packets between networks. |
Switch | A device used to connect multiple clients/servers together by intelligently forwarding data packets to the correct device. Found in star networks. |
Hub | A device used to connect multiple clients/servers together by broadcasting packets to all connected devices. |
Hardware | Physical parts of the computer eg A motherboard, a CPU, a keyboard and a monitor are all items of hardware. |
Software | The non physical parts of the computer e.g. applications |

WAN | Wide Area Network, connects multiple LANs together and you can share information. |
WLAN | Wireless Local Area Network, confined to small areas but uses wifi |
Intranet | A private internet, a good way of sharing information between workers. |
Proxy Server | Computer setup used to share resources, usually an internet connection |
