what are the key features of the tepidarium? often had benches for people to sit on, decorations, occasionally also had recesses, gently warmed
What would happen in the tepidarium? People would stay there for a long time, up to and over an hour, they would socialize and receive massages and be cleaned by slaves, business sometimes took place here as well.
What would the Romans use to clean themselves at the baths? Oil from oil bottles would be massaged into the skin then metal scrapers called strigils would be used to scrape the oil and dirt off.
Why did the Romans not spend long in the calidarium? As it was very hot so they would have a quick dip in the pool.
What are the key features of calidarium? Ridged roof so water ran off it, not very decorated, hot pool, cold basin, marble benches. Sometimes had windows
What were the features of the frigidarium? A circular cold plunge bath. Little decoration.
What was the job of slaves at the baths? They would be paid to guard clothes, and give massages to the Romans.
How were the baths heated? How did this work? The hypocaust system. hot air would be blown from a furnace under the floors of the baths, and up through the walls.
What was the palaestra? An area outside the baths were Romans would play sports such as wrestling and discus. There would be statues of famous sportsmen around to offer motivation and inspiration.
What would you find outside the baths? Business men offering their services, people selling food and beauty services; shops; workmen, carpenters and blacksmiths; musicians, pipe players.
What negatives were there to the baths? Thieves would linger outside the baths, fights would sometimes break out.
