What are the 3 components of Burnout? Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, Reduce sense of performance accomplishments.
What effect does emotional exhaustion have on the athlete? Reduces their resources to be able to cope with the demands of the situation.
What effect does depersonalization have on the athlete? More negative and cynical attitude towards the source of stress, becoming distant and indifferent. This method may help initially (distancing from the stressor) but will put more emotional strain on the athlete which leads to further exhaustion.
What effect does the reduced sense of performance accomplishment have on the athlete? The combination of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization can lead the athlete to evaluate themselves negatively, which leads to a reduced sense of performance accomplishment which can exacerbate emotional exhaustion and depersonalization.
Apart from Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization and a reduced sense of performance accomplishments what other factors does Burnout incorporate? 'Psychological, Emotional and sometimes Physical withdrawal from a formerly enjoyed activity in response to excessive stress or dissatisfaction'. Resentment of sport, sport devaluation.
Define Overtraining: A syndrome that results when excessive, usually physical, overload on an athlete occurs without adequate rest.
Define Staleness: An unexpected and long term loss of performance that cannot be attributed to factors such as illness or injury.
Describe the process which can lead to Dropout: Overtraining --> Staleness --> Burnout --> Dropout
What are the signs/symptoms of athletes who are at risk of Burnout: Negative mood shifts, struggle to meet personal/professional obligations, feelings of disappointment/frustration, physically tired, difficulty communicating, feel they receive insufficient support.
What are the signs/symptoms of a Burned Out athlete? Mental and Physical exhaustion, feeling isolated, low confidence, cant concentrate, feeling there careers aren't moving forward, feel contribution is not valued by teammates and coaches.

They looked at differences between Non Self-Determined (Amotivation) and Self-Determined (Intrinsic Motivation) athletes (swimmers).Results showed that those who shifted from high self determination to low self-determination were more at risk of burning out. Thus positive self-determined motivational profile have less chance of burnout.
What did Lemyre et al 2007 find in relation to why Burnout occurs in winter sport athletes? They found that less self-determined athletes at the beginning of the season were more likely to experience symptoms of burnout at the end of the season.
