Question Answer
What is population growth generally limited by? Mortality, and reproduction
Biotic Potential Unconstrained biological reporduction
What three things are required to produce a mathematical model of population growth? Number of individuals of each population, number of offspring that each population can produce, time
N, r, t N(Number of individuals, r(number of offspring per adult, t(number of time steps into the future)
Reproduction is CONTINUOUS
Carrying capacity The number of plants or animals that can be supported by the environment without depleting the available resources
overshoot When a population exceeds the carrying capacity of the environment and death results from a scarcity of resources
Population crash or dieback A rapid die back in the population to a level below the carrying capacity
Species that are able to overcome undpredictable environmental conditions or exploit new ones R-selected species
S-Shaped population growth also known as Logistic growth
Species that are adapted to the environment which stays generally the same for a long period of time K-Selected species
Density dependent factor Mechanisms of population control change as the density of the population changes, generally the living things of ecosystems(predation, disease, crowding and stress, paratism
Interspecific interactions between species
Intraspecific interactions within a species
Density independent factors Some factors operate independently of how many individuals are in the population (fire, drought, climate, weather, landslides, floods)
Metapopulations A group of populations that are separated by space but consist of the same species
Demographic bottleneck A few members of a species survive a catastrophic event such as a natural disaster or uncontrolled harvest
Founder effect few individuals start a new population
Inbreeding depression Reduced fitness in a given population as a result of breeding related individuals
Minimum viable population the number of individuals needed for long term survival of rare or endangered species
