Question | Answer |
What is information? | The resolution of uncertainty. |
What is noise? | Increased uncertainty. |
On average how much information can one nerve transmit? What is this rate determined by? | 164 bits/sec, the rate is determined by the maximum rate of nerve firing. |
How can we transmit a larger range of information about an area of our body? | Using parallel nerves with overlapping ranges |
What does myelination do the nerve in terms of resistance and therefore the time constant? | Increases the Rm and decreases the resistance of Cm. This alone would have no effect on the time constant however myelination causes salutatory conduction therefore speeding up conduction. |
What ion is destabilizing and what ion is stabilizing and explain what this means? | Na+ is a destabilizing ion meaning the more that is released the faster the rate of release will become i.e. positive feedback control. Stabilizing ions would be K+ as more enters the cell the slower the entry rate becomes, i.e. it is controlled by negative feedback. |
