Memory- The persistence of learning over time through the storage retrieval of information
Flashbulb memory- Clear memory of an emotionally significant moment or event
Information Processing Model
Encoding- Getting info into memory system
Storage- the retention of encoded info over time
Retrieval- Getting info out of memory storage
Sensory Storage- the brief initial coding of sensory info in the memory system
-unlimited capacity -fraction of a second
Iconic Memory- momentary sensory of visual stimuli (less than 1/2 second
Echoic Memory- momentary sensory of auditory or sound info (3-4 sec)
Short Term Memory- conscious, activated memory that holds a few items before the info is stored more permanently or forgotten. (10-20 sec) -"our attention span" -aka working memory
Long Term Memory- the relatively permanent and limitless storehouse of the memory system. -Requires deep processing or elaborate rehersal-linking new info to previously learned things
Maintenance rehearsal- repeating info over and over to maintain in STM
Chunking- Organizing items into meaningful events
Retrospective memory- the content to be remembered (ppl, words, events, ect.) is in the past
Prospective memory- the content to be remembered is in the future. (ex dr appt tomorrow)
