Chemistry 1
The Evolution of the Atmosphere
The First Two Billion Years
Any atmosphere was 'boiled' away because of the heat
Eventually a thin crust formed but volcanoes were still erupting
The volcanoes gave out CO2, H20 and N2 which was how the 1st atmosphere was formed
The early atmosphere was mostly CO2 and H2O with almost no O2
The oceans formed when the water vapour condensed as the Earth cooled
The next two billion years
Green plants evolved and covered the surface of the Earth
A lot of CO2 dissolved into Oceans. The green plants removed CO2 and produced O2 through photosynthesis
When the plants died the Carbon (from the CO2) they had removed from the air became 'locked' in sedimentary rocks as fossil fuels
The Evolution of complex organisms
The build up of O2 killed some of the earliest organisms allowing more complex ones to grow.
There is virtually no CO2
