Milgram's Agency Theory
  1. We have 2 social states !
    1. Agentic state- we follow orders from legit authority (age/uniform) + don't feel responsible for actions e.g. school.
      1. Autonomous state- being responsible for our own actions + follow out free will
        1. passing from Autonomous to Agentic = 'Agentic Shift'
          1. Moral strain- Signs of stress + guilt we feel when following orders we believe is wrong -use defence mechanisms e.g. denial
          2. Strengths- Theory has real life applications to explain obe. e.g. soldiers in ww2 following orders from Hitler (agentic) + Milgrams exp. followed orders from experimenter + passed over responsibility (agentic shift) / Can apply to Hofling's exp. (nurses agents to 'doctor')!
            1. Weaknesses- Agency theory can't explain individual differences in obe. - Milgram's exp. 35% of pps didn't do 450v even though in same state as pps who did obey.
