Classification by stimuli detected
  1. Mechanoreceptors
    1. found in skin, walls of blood vessels, stomach, bladder, ear
      1. detect pressure or strecth
        1. touch, pressure, vibration, hearing, proprioception (muscle belly), equilibrium & blood pressure
          1. Pressure is a sustained sensation felt over a larger area than touch
            1. Result from tactile receptors in deeper tissues & longer lasting & less variation in intensity than touch sensations
              1. type II cutaneous mechanoreceptors & lamellated (Pacinian) corpuscles
            2. Vibration sensations result from rapidly repetitive sensory signals from tactile receptors
            3. Thermoreceptors
              1. detect temperature
              2. Nociceptors
                1. Detect damage to tissues (pain)
                2. Photoreceptors
                  1. detect light
                  2. Chemoreceptors
                    1. Detect molecules
                      1. taste, smell & changes in body fluid chemistry
