Resource summary
Buoyancy
Definition: The upward force exerted by fluid to counterbalance the weight of an object.
Archimedes' Principle
Founded by Archimedes of Syracuse
Buoyancy = Weight of displaced fluid
3 Classes of Buoyancy
Sink. In this state, the object weight is larger than the upward force by the fluid, causing it to sink.
Neutral Buoyancy. In this state, an object neither floats nor sink in a fluid.
Upthrust. In this state, the body is buoyant that it floats.
Useful Equation
F = Ahpg
Where F is buoyant force, A is the surface area, h is the immersed height of the body, g is gravity and p is density of the fluid.
Below: Image detailing how buoyancy is determined on an object by its mass, gravity and density of fluid.
Industrial Application
Transportation, such as ships and aircraft.
Safety equipment, such as buoy, to be used during an air crash, or during the safety offshore training.
