THE FACTORY
DANGEROUS WORKING CONDITIONS
Machinery had no protective measures
Workers had no protective clothing
The noise could cause deafness & heavy work caused deformities
POOR SANITATION
No proper toilet facilities
The smell & overuse caused disease & illness
WAGES
Cheaper to employ women & children
Paid tokens rather than wages to buy goods they had made
Paid some of their wages against factory owned accommodation
Factory rules meant fine so less wages to pay
PAUPER APPRENTICES
Given food, clothes & bed instead of wages
Often worked day/night shifts
early start, long days average 12 hours
Worked before breakfast & only 2 short breaks for meals
Mainly orphans as the factories agreed to house & train them
Hard, physical labour
CHILDREN
Employed as extra income for family
Didn't go to school so kept them off the streets
Cheap labour & easy to control
Bullied & beaten by overseer so produced more & then he got paid better
NOT WILLING TO CHANGE
Finance - cost to much to improve working conditions
Have to consider the workers, especially children
Possibly pay more
May have to stop children working nights and/ 12 hour shifts
