The conferences in WW2
between the USA,USSR and
GB
The Tehran conference 1943
people present
FDR, USA
Churchill, GB
Stalin, USSR
the focus was on the war and how to win it
they agreed that the USA and GB would launch
a second from against the Germans to take
pressure of the Soviets
they also focused on what will happen in Europe after the war
East Europe would be in Stalins influence and they would
take land from Poland (and Poland taking from Germany)
FDR often sided with Stalin instead of
Churchill in hope of securing their help in the
USA's war against Japan
importance
it showed the Grand alliance to be working
and that they could co-operate
it also showed that agreeing on what will happen to Europe to be difficult especially with
how much influence Stalin will have
The Yalta Conference February 1945
the leaders got on quite well and the mood was positive
it was the same leaders from 1943
they were close to
defeating Germany
it was agreed ht Germany and Berlin would be divided into 4 zones of
occupation (GB, USA, USSR, France)
it was agreed that Nazi leaders would be found an put on trial
the UN ( United Nations) was set up in place of The
League of Nations and would meet for the first time in
April 1945
importance
it showed the alliance could still work together
it left difficult decisions to b made at a later date
Stalin promised free elections but
would he do this?
would the keep Germany weak or let it recover
Stalin wanted it weak but FDR and Churchill
didn't want to repeat the mistakes of
Versailles
The Potsdam Conference July/August 1945
change in people
Stalin
FDR died and was replaced
with Truman
Churchill lost the election and was replaced with Attlee
Stalin was now working with people he didn't know
and was convinced that Truman was more hostile to
communism
there were increasing tensions over the new
government of Poland where elections were still not
held
stalin was allowed to take resources from
the Soviet zone for war compensation but
the USA and GB didn't want to cripple their
zones
they agreed to give industrial equipment to
Stalin and the Soviets were less developed
it was influenced by the news that the USA had tested the atomic
bomb, Truman hoed it would give him the edge but it made Stalin
more suspicious especially as they did not say it would be used on
japan
importance
they were still allies and were still trying to
work together, they agreed the decisions
made at Yalta and the banning of the Nazi
party
the dissagrements were more important than the agreement
and the wartime co-operation seemed to be over
it seemed that the arms race was starting due to the use of
the atomic bomb and Stalin was developing his own
