  1. Before the war the USA had not had an active presence in Europe, however the war and the Truman Doctrine changed the and ensured that the USA would play an active ole in Europe. The civil war in Greece suggested that communism might take over, this convinced Truman to finally act. He asked the US congress for $400 million to help the government of Greece and Turkey to fight the communists in their countries
    1. its most important feature was Truman's promise to contain the spread of communism everywhere, supporting ' free people ' with money or military
      1. it was significant as it committed the USA to remaining involved in Europe. The idea of containment was the main aim the US foreign policy for the next 40 years.
        1. Stalin felt threatened by Truman's new policy and argued that the USA was being aggressive to the USSR and its new satellite states, he decided t tighten his control over eastern Europe and put Truman and his policy to the test
          1. With the US help the Greek Government were able to defeat the communists presenting that Truman provided good help
