Plunge Pool | A hollow at the base of a waterfall caused by erosion (hydraulic action and abrasion) |
Gorge | A steep sided valley created as a waterfall retreats backwards |
V-shaped Valley | A narrow steep-sided valley formed by the vertical river erosion. |
Rapids | Rapids result from a gentle gradient change caused by alternating bands of hard and soft rock. |
Knick Points | The point on a river channel where there is a sharp change in channel slope, resulting from rejuvenation. The knick point marks the previous base level. |
Riffles and pools | Riffles are shallow sections of the channel which occur where velocity is lower between meander pools. Pools are the deeper sections where velocity is greater on the outside of a meander bend. |
Meander | A bend in the river. |
Ox-bow lake | A crescent shaped lake formed when a river cuts through the neck of a meander. |
Levee | A raised embankment formed by the deposition of material when a river floods its banks. |
Deltas | The result of a decrease in velocity when a river enters a lake or the sea. The coarsest sediment is deposited first and the finest last of all. |
Waterfall | A vertical or near vertical drop of water resulting from a sudden change in river gradient due to alternating bands of hard and soft rock. |
Pothole | A rounded hole abraded by load into the resistant rock river bed. |
Incised meander | A deep, steep-sided meander bend formed by severe vertical (downwards) erosion of an existing meander. They are usually the result of rejuvenation. |
floodplain | The area of land found either side of a river. |
