Cystic Fibrosis id caused by what type of allele? Recessive
What does cystic fibrosis cause in the body? The production of lots of thick mucus in the airways and pancreas
Describe a genetic diagram of two carriers of cystic fibrosis.
What is the possibility of a child having cystic fibrosis if both of their parents are carriers? 1 in 4
What type of allele is polydactyly? Dominant
What is polydactyly? When a child is born with extra fingers or toes
What does IVF stand for? In vitro fertilisation
What is IVF? When embryos are fertilised in a lab and then implanted into the womb of the mother.
Why is more than one egg fertilised during IVF? So there is a higher chance of it being successful
What is embryo screening? Where a cell is removed from the embryo to analyse it's genes
Give 4 positives for embryo screening 1) It can help to stop suffering of the baby 2) There are laws that stop it from going too far 3) During IVF most embryos are destroyed anyway, screening just helps to select the "good" embryos 4) It saves the government money as treating the disorder is more expensive
Give 4 negatives of embryo screening 1) People might just use it to pick the most "desirable" baby 2) The rejects are destroyed (they could be humans) 3) it implies that genetic disorders are "undesirable" 4) It is expensive for the parents
