Subsidiary | A company which is owned by another media company, they will have merged into a conglomerate or another subsidiary. Subsidiary companies begin as independent companies. E.g. Lucasfilm ltd who are a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company |
Independant | A company that is not owned by any other company and does not own anyone else. Independents have only small budgets and sometimes need to work with other companies to distribute their products. E.g. Warp Films |
Vertical Intergration | When a company owns all stages of production and distribution. Also, when a company buys out or merges with another they take over the entire production and distribution process. E.g Walt Disney, as they own film studios and can also distribute the films |
Horizontal Intergration | When a company only owns one stage of production or distribution. Also, when the company buys out or merges with another they will only take over their own area of production or distribution - they branch out into the same area. E.g Walt Disney as they own multiple film studios |
Synergy | When two or more things work together to benefit each other. Synergy happens when a media conglomerate releases different products to promote one another. E.g. Star Wars; The Force Awakens merchandise |
Symbiosis | When a company teams up with a different company in order to mutually promote one another's products. Companies often pay huge amounts of money to get their products related to a release of a blockbuster film. E.g. The Burger King Darth Vader burger |
Cross-Media Ownership | When a conglomerate owns different subsidiaries across different areas of the media. Ultimately this will mean that this company uses diversification and synergy to promote its products. E.g. The Walt Disney Company uses its subsidiaries in order to promote its products |
Dominant Ideology | The prevalent beliefs, attitudes and opinions of society. Films can help create a dominant ideology and can influence how we think about certain things. E.g. In a lot of American films, America is seen as a great country with lots of power |
Cultural Imperialism | When a country's culture becomes saturated by media products from another country. E.g. American films and television make up a substantial percentage of media within the UK |
Homogenisation of Culture | When the same kind of media products are produced creating a culture of "sameness". E.g. The multiplexes are filled with American blockbusters |
