when collecting the sample, clinician should	-be friendly & enthusiastic -show u value the child -learn to think like the child -keep directions simple -follow child's lead -be patient and wait -use following equipment: recorder, microphone, and timer (5-15 min session)
difference bw conversational and narrational language sampling contexts	-conversation: preschool through MS & HS, targets pragmatic skills for social interaction (turn taking, topic maintenance etc) -narration: elementary school - MS & HS, most relevance for school performance, provides info about oral comm skills required for reading, maintaining story structure, relating order of event, describing character relationships, etc
transcription conventions	-speaker labels --> must begin w/ letter or number with no blank spaces -first line of transctip begins with $ -first speaker listed is target speaker (child) -first character of each speaker label identifies speaker and must be unique (like C-Child E-Examiner)
Communication Units (C-Units)	-an independent clause & its modifier -cannot be further divided without the disappearance of its essential meaning -main clauses can stand by themselves and are segmented into 1 C-unit -subordinate clauses depend on main clause to make sense
