Chapter 4 - The Current Ethernet Specification
  1. Ethernet Basics
    1. Collision Domain
      1. Scenario where one device sends a packet on a network segment which forces every other device on that same physical network segment to pay attention to it.
        1. Typically found in a hub environment
        2. Broadcast Domain
          1. The set of all devices on a network segment that hear all the broadcasts sent on that segment.
            1. Boundary delimited by physical media like switches and repeaters, reference to logical division where all hosts can reach each other via a Data Link layer broadcast.
            2. CSMA/CD Carrier Sense Multiple Access w/ Collision Detection
              1. Protocol that helps devices share the bandwidth evenly without having two devices transmit at the same time on the network medium.
                1. Check for presence of signal
                  1. If clear proceed to transmit.
                    1. trnsmit host constantly check for signal on wire.
                      1. Send Jam to all hosts if signal detected
                        1. Respond to jam by waiting random time before ransmit again.
                          1. If after 15 tries still collisions the host trying to transmit will time out
                2. Half-Duplex
                  1. Using only one wire pair. Either transmitting or receiving but not both.
                  2. Full-Duplex
                    1. Uses 2 pairs of wires. Can transmit and receive simultaneously.
                      1. Collision prevention
                        1. 200Mbps - Aggregate rate.
                      2. Ethernet = Connection media-access method that allows all hosts on a network to share the same bandwidth of a link.
                      3. Ethernet and the Data Link Layer
                        1. Binary to Decimal & Hex Conversion
                          1. Nibble - 4 bits
                            1. Nibble Values 8-4-2-1
                            2. Byte - 8 bits
                              1. Byte Values128 -64 - 32 - 16 - 8 -4 - 2 - 1
                            3. Ethernet Addressing
                              1. Mac Address/Hardware Address
                                1. 48 bit - 6 byte
                                  1. |-------24bits-----------|------------24bits----------| IG / GL | OUI | Vendor Assigned
                                    1. OUI - Organizationally unique identifier = Assigned by IEEE to an organization
                                      1. IG = Individual/Group bit = When 0 assume device, when 1 assume broadcast or multicast
                                        1. GL = Global/Local bit = When 0 globally administered address, 1 locally administered.
                                  2. Ethernet Frames
                                    1. Encapsulate packets handed down from the Network Layer for transmission on a type of physical media
                                    2. Channel Bonding
                                      1. 2 or more network interfaces on a host are combined for redundancy and/or increased throughput
                                    3. Ethernet at the Physical Layer
