Authentic Assessment
A form of assessment in which students demonstrate their knowledge by applying knowledge and skills to complete real-world tasks
Teachers can use authentic assessments along with traditional assessments.
It is recommended for teachers to use multiple, varied of assessments.
AAs are the demonstration of knowledge by PERFORMING A TASK
AAs are NOT choosing an answer from several choices
Students are not limited. They may show knowledge in an variety of ways.
AAs are structured to be like real-life situations.
In life outside of school, citizens are expected to demonstrate knowledge.
With AAs, students demonstrate knowledge much like they will need in the real world.
AAs are constructed to have students analyze, synthesize, and apply what they have learned to a task.
AAs are NOT recalling and recognizing information.
AAs raise expectations of students by having them apply knowledge, not just repeat what they have learned.
AAs are designed to be student-structured and student-driven.
AAs are not teacher-structured.
Teachers can facilitate.
AAs give more direct evidence of application and construction of acquired knowledge.
With traditional assessments, evidence of learning can be more indirect.
Evidence of learning is inferred.
Rubrics are used to record evidence of learning.
AAs are created to ensure that students know HOW to use knowledge.
Students know what, why, and how.
Allow teachers to track students progress regularly and often.
Teacher can modify instructions as needed.
Teachers and students can view progress of learning.
AAs can allow EBs to demostrate knowledge by performance where language could be a barrier.
AAs give EBs activities to practice oral communication and reading.
