  1. caused by a protozoan called Plasmodium, which feeds on human red blood cells
    1. Plasmodium (papasite) is carried by mosquitoes (vectors) and transmitted to humans (hosts) by mosquito mites
      1. a parasite is an organism that feeds off another living organism causing it harm
        1. vectors are not affected by the disease
        2. knowledge of the life cycle of mosquitoes has helped to stop the spreading of malaria
