Slide 1

    Controlling a Hazard
The following set of slides is going to go through an example of identifying and controlling a hazard in relation to insects. This example will focus on flies. Controlling pests in a corrective manner will help to ensure further prevention and costly methods are required. Flies are a hazard in both food manufacturing and production, therefore, critical control limits need to be established in order to determine what is an appropriate amount of flies to be caught within a specific time frame.
    Rubrica: : A common housefly

Slide 2

    Managing Those Pests
Regular monitoring and recording on a control board system enables the species of fly to be identified - it is important to recognise that different species of fly behaviour and breed differently   By recognising the species present, effective measures can then be pursued for prevention e.g. fruit flies live and breed in drain areas, so preventative treatment focused on waste areas is irrelevant

Slide 3

    Managing Those Pests
It is important also to have different insect light traps on the premises in order to produce correct prevention strategies   For example, if an infestation has occurred in the working environment then insect light traps can be used to examine how effective the treatment has been by monitoring the number of flies killed against the critical control limits
