Visual Pathway
- Most ganglion cells cross to the
opposing hemispherere and the
go to the lateral geniculate
necleus (part of the thalamus).
They then go to the primary visual
cortex in the occipital lobe
- Ventral stream- through the
temporal cortex. The 'what'
pathway. Identifies and
recognizes objects
- Dorsal stream- through
the parietal cortex. The
'where' pathway. Helps
motor system locate
objects.
- Other ganglion cells go to the
superior colliculus or the
hypothalamus that controls the
waking-sleeping schedule
- Parvocellular neurons- small
cell bodies and receptive
fields, are mostly in or near the
fovea (colour, visual details).
- Magnocellular neurons- large cell
bodies and receptive fields, evenly
distributed throughout the retina
(movement, large overall patterns).
