What does too much cholesterol in the blood do to the body? It increases the risk of heart disease and diseased arteries
Cholesterol levels in the blood can affect health. What else can affect the health? Other factors such as inherited factors
What types of food are fats found in? Cheese, butter, margarine and oils
What do carbohydrates do in terms of the body? They are a source of energy for life processes
Why are fats needed in the body? As a source of energy for life processes and also needed to make cell membranes and to insulate our bodies
Where can carbohydrates be found? Potatoes, pasta, bread, bananas, sugar and rice
What is needed in small amounts for healthy functioning of the body? Mineral ions and vitamins
When a person is described as malnourished, what does it mean? That they have an imbalanced diet
Having too much food might lead to what? Being overweight
Having too little food may lead to what? Being underweight
What is respiration? A chemical reaction that allows cells to release energy from food
What is metabolic rate? It is the speed at which chemical reactions in the body take place
Why does the metabolic rate vary within different people? Due to several factors, including age, gender and inherited factors
What happens to the metabolic rate during and after exercise? It increases and then stays high for a while afterwards
Give one example of factors that will affect the metabolic rate - the proportion of muscle to fat in the body - the amount of exercise and other physical activity
What does too little vitamin D, do to the body? It can cause rickets, which affects the proper growth of the skeleton
Name another problem other than rickets which is commonly referred to poor diet Type 2 diabetes
How can a person lose body mass? By having a diet that consists of food with a lower energy content than the amount of energy their body uses
