Petechia round, pinpoint area of hemorrhage
Papule -solid, raised lesion -less than 5mm in diameter
Nodule -solid, raised lesion -greater than 5mm in diameter
Macule -focal area of color change -not elevated or depressed in relation to surrounding mucosa
Plaque -flat lesion -may be slightly elevated in relation to surrounding mucosa
Ulcer -discontinuity of skin/mucosa -complete loss of epidermis/epithelium revealing connective tissue -frequently appears depressed/excavated -yellow in color
Erosion -discontinuity of skin/mucosa -incomplete loss of epidermis/epithelium -red in color
Vesicle -superficial blister -less than 5mm in diameter -fluid-filled
Bulla -Blister -greater than 5mm in diameter -fluid-filled
Papillary exhibiting numerous surface projections
Verrucous rough, warty surface
Sessile -broad-based -base is widest part of lesion -used to describe mass lesions
Pedunculated -narrow base -stalk is more narrow than mass -used to describe mass lesions
Pustule discrete, pus-filled, raised lesion
Fissure Narrow/slit-like ulceration or groove
Cyst -pathologic cavity -epithelium-lined -often filled with liquid (more common in bone than soft tissue)
