Define sex... This refers to biological distinctions between males and females. It consists of both primary & secondary sex characteristics.
Define gender? This is what a society considers proper behaviors and attitudes for its male and female members.
Why do the behaviors of males and females differ? Nature vs. Nurture
What is the Symbolic Interactionist Perspective? A theoretical perspective in which society is viewed as composed of symbols that people use to establish meaning, develop their views of the world, and communicate with one another.
What is a functional analysis? A theoretical framework in which society is viewed as composed of various parts, each with a function that, when fulfilled, contributes to society's equilibrium, also known as functionalism and structural functionalism.
What is the conflict perspective? They focus on how groups compete for scarce resources.
What is Social Stratification? This refers to a hierarchy of privilege based on property, power, and prestige.
What are the four major systems of social stratification? 1. Slavery 2. Caste 3. Estate 4. Class
What determines class? 1. If you own the means of production, you belong to the bourgeoisie. 2. If you do not, you are one of the proletariat.
Why is Social Stratification Universal? In order to attract the most capable people to fill its important positions, society must offer them greater rewards.
Define Social Functionism a theory that explains why society function the way it does by emphasizing on the relationships between the various social institutions that make up society (government, law, education, religion, etc).
What is Symbolic Interactionism? It is a micro level theory that focuses on the relationships amount individuals within a society. Communication - the exchange of meaning through language and symbols - is believed to be the way in which people make sense of their social world.
What is Social Conflict? The struggle for agency or power in society. It occurs when 2 or more actors oppose each other in an effort to achieve incompatible goals whilst preventing the other from attaining their own.
