Describe Cost Look at the products cost and compare prices, how much does it cost individually or in bulk. Be aware of social costs in packaging, costs that will affect the community like waste disposal.
Describe target market Who uses this product, age groups, cultures, religions.
Describe moral and cultural issues Some things can offend certain people, consider the views of others. Materials and components should be sourced from both ethical and recyclable sources.
Describe international trade As there is an increased importance for international trade different cultures and their environments need to be considered. The Ethical trading initiative is formed from businesses the promote social and environmental fair trade.
Describe product history You need to consider where the product originates from. Milk bottles became milk cartons.
Describe alternative products Evaluate your product against either a similiar or a competitors product.
Describe hygience Will the product be easy to clean.
Describe materials Investigate what the product is made of.
Describe the manufacturing process Explain what method of production is used to make your product and why. (Also say what type of production it is.)
Describe ergonomics How the product suits the user, designing a product that interacts most efficiently and safely with people.
What is the difference between good design and good manufacture? Well designed product - carries out its function, looks good, and attracts customers. Well manufactured products - has been made to a good standard, finish, folds colours and material are satisfactory.
What is anthropometric data? Body measurements.
How do you use anthropometric data when designing a product? Find out the measurements of the typical user and design a product that fits these measurements. Aim to fit 90% of the target users.
