Question Answer
What land changes happen during the Permain period? the appearance of the north-to-south super continent, Pangaea.
What biological changes happened during the Permian period? retire-like mammals appeared. reptile radiated, insects started to diversify
Why happened to marine life in this period? 90-95% of marine life and 70% of terrestrial species were wiped out.
Why do we believe this extinction occurred? Pangaea right in the middle of the planet may have caused a disruption in ocean circulation. This would lower the oxygen levels in the water which marine life needs. There may have also been asteroid and volcanic activity.
How was this extinction beneficial? It allowed for the diversity of reptiles and an increases in species diversity in general, which is true for all species extinction
What are temporal openings? Why are they important? these are one or two holes in the skulls of organisms that change the function of the jaw. Different positions or the presense of the holes benefited or hindered species and allowed for more complex and thriving mammals
what are the 4 types of temporal openings? anaspid = no holes such in turtles. Synapsids = one hole such as in mammals. Diapsid = 2 holes such as birds and dinosaurs. and Euyiapsid = modified diapsid in extinct predators
Why are holes in the skull beneficial? It allows the muscles of the jaw to have an anchor and an area that they stretch across. This lets the muscles grow longer and stronger, meaning for effective predators
describe the Triassic period in the Mesozoid era. (2 things) 251-200 mya. the domination of gymnosperm plants and the radiation of dinosaurs, birds, and mammals
Describe the Jurassic period in the Mesozoic Era. (2 things) 200-145 mya. Th domination of the dinosaurs. gymnosperm were present
Describe the Cretaceous period in the Mesozoic era. (2 things) 145-65 mya. Extinction of he dinosaurs and other species. angiosperm appears.
What did he cretaceous extinction effect? What did it not effect? killed off the dinosaurs, marine retiles, some land mammals, temperate zone plants, and cephalopods. it did not effect small land mammals, tropical plants, or fresh water organisms.
