Perception: definition The conscious awareness & interpretation of sensations & is primarily a function of the cerebral cortex.
Where are memories of our perceptions stored? In the cortex
Sensation: definition The conscious or subconscious awareness of changes in the external or internal environment.
Referred pain: definition When pain is felt in a surface area far from the injured organ. Eg. heart attack is felt in left arm since both are supplied by spinal cord segment T1-T5
3 types of pain relief: - aspirin & ibuprofen block formation of prostaglandins that stimulate nociceptors - novocain blocks conduction of nerve impulses along pain fibers - morphine lessen the perception of pain in the brain
Parkinson & Huntington disease result from damage to which part of the brain? Basal Ganglia - uncontrollable, abnormal body movements, muscle rigidity & tremors
