What is the Consulting Approach/Philosophy? | This refers to the Sport Psychologists consultation style with the athlete, which consists of communication skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to teach mental skills. They should also be able to fit in and understand team culture and should encourage client independance. VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE ATHLETE IS AWARE OF THE BOUNDARIES OF THE RELATIONSHIP. |
What are some qualities a Sport Psychologist should have to build a relationship with an athlete who is undergoing there MST program? | Ability to build rapport, Demonstrate Empathy, Open and Approachable, Learn about the sport, Good communication skills. |
What must the athlete be when participating in an MST? | Open and Honest, Open-minded, give Feedback on consulting effectiveness, commited and actively participate in the MST. |
What are the 3 phases of an MST? | Education, Acquisition, Practice |
What is the primary purpose of the Education phase? | To get the athlete hooked on Sports Psychology and more specifically on the MST- highlight the positive effects. |
What is the Acquisition stage, and what is its primary purpose? | The learning phase. It is the phase where you establish WHAT techniques your going to teach, WHY your going to teach them, WHEN your going to teach them, HOW your going to teach them. |
What things are key to do and emphasize to the athlete in the Acquisition phase of an MST? | You should stress to the athlete that they are personally responsible and thus you yourself must be athlete centred and flexible. It is also the stage in which to use such techniques as setting goals and using journals to track progress. It is also important to stress other life pursuits. |
What is the practice phase and what is its primary focus? | This is the phase whereby you implement the techniques learnt in training and competition. |
