What is Perfectionism? Perfectionism is a multi-dimensionable personality disposition.

We know Perfectionism is a multidimensional personality description, but what qualities create this disposition? Personal Qualities (Personal standards, Organisation, Concern over mistakes, Doubts about actions) and Interpersonal Qualities (Parental expectations, Parental criticism).
What is the defining feature or characteristic of Perfectionism? Concern Over Mistakes.
What can a high concern over mistakes lead to: Increased: Burnout, Ego Orientation, Competitive Anxiety. Decreased: Task Orientation, Confidence, Self-esteem, Perceived athletic competence, Performance Satisfaction.
What are the 3 types of Perfectionism? Self-Orientated. Other-Orientated. Socially Prescribed.
Define Self-Orientated Perfectionism: Excessive striving and demanding absolute perfection from the self.
Define Other-Orientated Perfectionism: Demanding perfection from other people (Lombardian Ethic)
Define Socially Prescribed Perfectionism: The perception that other people demand perfection from oneself.
What did Hill, Hall, Appleton and Kozub 2008 find in relation to the effect of Self-Orientated and Socially Prescribed Perfectionism? That moderate levels of S-PP is good but leaves you vulnerable, whereas S-PP is debilitating to performance.
Do positive and negative forms of perfectionism exist? Yes. Maladaptive Evaluative Concerns and Positive Striving.
List some factors which characterise Maladaptive Evaluative Concerns: Concerns over mistakes, Parental Criticism, Parental Expectations, Doubts about actions, Sociall-prescribed perfectionism.
List some factors which characteristics Positive Striving: Personal Standards, Organisation, Self-orientated perfectionism, Other-Orientated Perfectionism.
What characteristics do those with Maladaptive Evaluative Concerns exhibit? Cant experience pleasure from efforts, un-reasonably high standards, fear of failure, focus on avoiding error, tense/anxious, harsh self-criticism, Procrastination.
What characteristics do those who Positively Strive exhibit? Able to feel satisfaction from efforts, High yet achievable standards, Strive for success, Focus on doing things right, Relaxed but careful attitude, Renew effort following failure.
Compared with Positive Strivers Perfectionists report: Higher social physique anxiety, negative affect, physical symptoms, emotional and physical symptoms. A greater fear of failure, Mastery Avoidance Goals, Performance Approach Goals, External Regulation, Amotivation and decreased self-determined motivation. THUS PERFECTIONISTIC TENDENCIES UNDERMINE WELL-BEING AND ADAPTIVE MOTIVATIONAL PROCESSES IN DANCERS.
What effect does perfectionism have on performance? Perfectionism decreases performance under false-negative feedback condition only.
