What is the equation for photosynthesis? carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
Where does the energy for photosynthesis come from and how do plants absorb it? During photosynthesis light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll in the chloroplasts of the green parts of the plant. It is used to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar.
What factors limit the rate of photosynthesis in plants? The rate of photosynthesis may be limited by shortage of light, low temperature and shortage of carbon dioxide.
How can we use what we know about limiting factor to grow more food? We can manipulate the levels of light, temperature and carbon dioxide artificially to increase the rate of photosynthesis in food crops.
What do plants do with the glucose they make? They use it for respiration, to convert insoluble starch for storage, to produce fats or oils for storage and to produce fats, proteins or cellulose for use in the cells and cells walls.
How do plants store food? Plants convert some of the glucose produced in photosynthesis into starch to be stores.
What other materials do plant and algal cells need to produce proteins? Nitrate ions and amino acids which make up proteins.
How can we control the environment in which plants are grown? We can control the temperature and the levels of the light and carbon dioxide by using a greenhouses.
Hydroponics Growing plants in water enriched by minerals ions rather than soil.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of growing plants in an artificial environment? The advantage of using an artificial environment is that there will be no limiting factor for the growth of the plant. The disadvantage is that it will be expensive and will require a lot of energy.
What factors affect the distribution of organisms in their natural environment? Temperature, Nutrients, Amount of light, availability of water, oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Are animals as well as plants affected by physical factors? Yes
How can you measure the distribution of living things in their natural environment? By random sampling with qudrats or sampling along a transect.
