P3g - Falling Safely | . |
Falling Objects | All objects fall with the same acceleration due to gravity, as long as the effect of air resistance is very small. |
The size of air resistance | The size of air resistance force on a falling object depends on: -it's cross sectional area - the larger the area the greater the air resistance. -its speed, the faster it falls the greater the air resistance. |
Terminal Speed | When objects fall through the Earth's atmosphere they get faster and faster until they reach a terminal speed. This is when the upwards force (air resistance) and downwards force (weight) equal each other. At this point the object travels at its fastest speed. |
Factors that affect falling | The factors affecting the terminal speed of a falling object include: - its mass - its surface area - the acceleration due to gravity, g. |
On the Moon | There is no drag on falling objects when there is no atmosphere. This means that the acceleration of falling objects due to gravity is the same whatever their mass and shape. |
