Operating a forklift, also known as a powered industrial truck, is regulated by OSHA, a federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration. With these regulations in place, every employer must ensure that only certified workers operate forklifts for safety purposes. Training and certification of forklift operators can be done by either an outside company or a qualified employee. The good thing is that there are companies today that offer online forklift certification training. After all, online certification would be a lot more convenient for many employers.
Powered Industrial Trucks Several types of powered industrial trucks are covered by OSHA regulations. Powered industrial trucks have the following features: power-propelled by internal combustion engines or electric engines; capable of lifting, stacking, carrying or pushing materials and can either be controlled by walking or riding. Requirements for OSHA Certification Before operating a forklift, except for training purpose, the company must certify that the worker is trained and evaluated to handle the equipment. Forklift certification training is usually specific for the type of powered industrial truck that the worker is prepared to use. In addition, the company must ensure that the person conducting the training is experienced and knowledgeable in training a forklift operator and can evaluate the competence of the operator. The Content of the Training Program According to OSHA, the company’s forklift training program must include certain content. It must actually be specific to the equipment that the worker will be operating and should only use the equipment and the company’s workplace. The workers must also be trained in aspects regarding the specific powered industrial truck such as instruments, engine, and controls as well as fork attachments. In addition, training needs to include formal instructions, such as review of written materials or lecture and practical use of the forklift which should involve demonstrations from the trainer and practical handling of the machine by the worker. Upon successful completion of the training program, the trainer should prepare a record that includes the name of the employer as well as that of the trainer and the dates when the training and evaluation were conducted. Refresher Forklift Training and Evaluation It is required that all forklift operators undergo a refresher training and evaluation in any particular company. At a minimum, the evaluation of the performance of the operator using the forklift must take place at least once every three years. Actually, OSHA stipulates that all forklift operators must renew their licenses after every three years. There are also events that may require immediate refresher OSHA forklift training such as the unsafe use of the forklift, a forklift accident or a near-miss, or a change in workplace conditions to enhance safety. There are many reasons as to why employers should only allow OSHA certified workers to operate forklifts. OSHA forklift certification not only saves the company money that could have otherwise been used for worker compensation but also helps to create a safe working environment. Forklift operators in any company are also required to go for refreshers so that they can be evaluated.
