B-LYMPHOCYTES
- Produce ANTIBODIES
- HUMORAL RESPONSE
- Made in BONE MARROW from PLURIPOTENT cells
- Mature in BONE MARROW
- When the encounter an antigen they become SENSITISED
- They then migrate to Lymphoid tissue for further processing
- 2 Types of cell develop
- PLASMA CELLS-secrete antibodies and clusters which are called clones
- MEMORY CELLS-respond to another encounte
- Stimulates plasma cells to produce antibodies
- Initiated by ACTIVATION PHASE
- Macrophages phagocytose and display epitopes
- (antigen presentation)
- T-HELPER cells recognise and bind to displayed antigen
- Activated T-HELPER cells trigger specific B-CELLS to proliferate and produce antibodies
- Divide by mitosis and differentiate into plasma cells(secrete antibodies)
- Circulate in blood, lymph and mucous membranes
- Produce memory cells (PRIMARY RESPONSE)
- Second encounter is therefore quicker (SECONDARY RESPONSE)
