Resumen del Recurso
Muscle Fibres
Muscles are made from thousands of muscles fibres which are bound together by connective tissue
Each muscle is made from a combination of 2 types of fibres. (Genetics)
1) Fast twitch (2 types)
Type 2b – Fast Twitch Glycolytic (FTG)
Structure
Capillary density - Low
Myoglobin content – lowest (protein which carries oxygen)
Motor Neuron Size – Large (send messages to contract muscle)
Colour – White
Size – Large
Mitonchondrial density – lowest (where aerobic respiration takes place within cells)
Functions
Aerobic capacity - Low
Fatiguability – Easily Fatigued
Speed of contraction - Fast
Force of contraction - High
Anaerobic capacity - High
POWER LIFTING SPRINTING
Type 2a – fast oxidative glycolytic (FOG)
Structure
Capillary Density – high
Colour – White
Size – Large
Motor Neuron Size – Large (send messages to contract muscle)
Mitonchondrial density – low (where aerobic respiration takes place within cells)
Myoglobin content – low (protein which carries oxygen)
Functions
Anaerobic capacity - Medium
Speed of contraction - Fast
Force of contraction - High
Aerobic capacity - Medium Anaerobic
Speed of contraction - Fast
200M swim 800M run
2) Slow twitch
Type 1 - Slow Oxidative
Structure
Capillary density – high (blood vessels)
Myoglobin content – high (protein which carries oxygen)
Size of fibre – Small
Motor Neuron Size – small (send messages to contract muscle)
Colour – Red
Mitonchondrial density – high (where aerobic respiration takes place within cells)
Function
Anaerobic capacity - Low
Speed of contraction - Slow
Fatiguability – Fatigue resistant
Force of contraction - Low
Aerobic capacity - High
MARATHON RUNNING
Everyone has a different mix of each, some peoples muscles may be made of upto 80-90% of one type
